  • Bio-image sensor for monitoring multi-neurotransmitters 영상 +강의담기

    In the last few decades, there has been increasing interest and investment in developing advances in analysis equipment to study the nervous system. The aim of neuroscientific studies is to explain the function of a neural circuit which is a population of neurons interconnected by synapses. Currently, two-photon fluorescence microscopy is widely used. However, this equipment requires expensive and huge implementations such as precise alignments and lenses, in general. In addition, it is necessary to carry out a pretreatment, like the fluorescent labeling of biomolecules in samples. To overcome these limitations, we proposed a bio-image sensor that not only is a portable and customizable device but also has potential in implantation for long-term recording. In order to image spatiotemporal activities of different neurotransmitters simultaneously, this sensor has been designed to consist of an enzyme-immobilized ISFET array and an integrated readout circuit. The details of the sensor and its future application will be given in this talk.

    The ability of nodes in a wireless network to be aware of their position continues to become more important for future applications and use cases like the Industrial Internet of Things. Positioning using cellular networks continues to draw attention as a mean to realize those future applications. New Radio (NR) provides many opportunities to use cellular networks to incorporate positioning solutions into those networks. In this seminar, the RAT-dependent solutions expected in 5G Rel-16 are introduced. 5G usecases requires centi-meter localization estimation accuracy, signal processing approaches for high localization accuracy are discussed.

    Image sensors are being used in a wide range of applications from consumer electronics to automotive industries. While Silicon has dominated the market by now, thin-film materials are a promising alternative for the NIR/SWIR imaging as they have higher absorption coefficient in this spectrum while can be monolithically integrated directly on top of a Silicon read-out IC (ROIC) wafer. Such an integration allows to manufacture high resolution infrared image sensors at lower cost compared to the resolution-limited III-V based sensors.

  • Deep Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Their Application to Class Imbalanced Learning 영상 +강의담기

    Generative Adversarial networks (GANs) are by far the most intriguing addition to the deep learning paradigm post 2014. For a given a training set, GANs learn to generate new data with the same statistics as the training set. For example, a GAN trained on photographs of particular kind can generate new photographs that look at least superficially authentic to human observers, having many realistic characteristics. This talk will start with an introduction to the working principle of GANs and illustrate a very important application of GANs toward class imbalanced learning, where one or more classes have very few representatives in the training sample. In particular, the talk will focus on GAN based oversampling of the minority class. The talk will finally unearth a few future research avenues concerning GANs.

  • Introduction to wind turbine dynamics and innovative rotor design 영상 +강의담기

    A global goal of holding warming well below 2on pre-industrial averages and to pursue efforts to limit temperature increase to 1.5were agreed from the Paris Climate Agreement, COP21. The United Kingdom set the renewable energy target that 15% of energy will be provided by renewable energy sources by 2020. Especially, 30% electricity will be produced by renewable sources such as wind, solar, bio, hydro etc.

    The UK is the world leader in offshore wind energy. In total 31 offshore wind farms are operating where 6.8GW from 1,753 turbines installed are produced which is equivalent of 4.5milion homes annual electricity consumption. Moreover, the world first floating wind farm is installed in the UK, called Hywind Scotland, a total capacity of 60MW.

    Most recently, GE announced that they will produce a 12MW offshore wind turbine which has 220m rotor diameter. It is the world largest wind turbine. In order to increase the electrical power output, it is essential to increase the rotor diameter. However, increasing rotor diameter results in increasing the total weight of the rotor. Generally, a wind turbine power is proportional to the square of the blade length while a weight of the blade is proportional to the cube of its length. A heavy wind turbine blade makes all other wind components heavier such as hub, nacelle, tower, and substructures resulting in less cost efficient. Therefore, in order to increase the wind turbine size without increasing the cost of the energy, innovative design via technology breakthroughs are required.

    In this seminar, I will provide two lectures. For the first lecture, I will cover fundamental theory of wind turbine system (Blade Element Momentum Theory) and introduce basic terminology of each wind turbine component which helps audiences to understand basics of wind turbine system. In the second lecture, I will present some of state-of-the-art technologies in both on- and off-shore wind turbine, which can tackle technical challenges to improve the wind turbine performances resulting in the cost of energy reduction even further. More specifically, I will introduce a study to design aeroelastically tailored blades based on geometric coupling such as a swept blade, which can reduce the vibrations of the wind turbines and increase the annual energy production. I will also present an innovative design study to replace active pitch control system with a passive system driven by centrifugal force or force imbalance between torque and thrust on the rotor. Finally, I will briefly talk about dynamic behaviors of a floating wind turbine system with different control strategies where I performed both numerical and experimental studies with a scaled DTU 10MW reference wind turbine with a tension leg platform.
